What’s included?
This download includes x2 (portrait orientation, pdf) A4 sheets, featuring one ‘Remembrance Day’ word search (page 1). The answers on page 2 clearly show where all words are hidden, displayed in the same layout (as page 1) to promote autonomy whilst providing easy comparison/quick reference.
Other seasonal wordsearches including Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, Harvest Festival, Halloween, Bonfire Night and other seasonal celebrations are also available in my TES shop.
Who’s it for?
This word search has been designed for pupils in years one and two, as well as students needing additional learning support.
Resource layout
The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font.
The Remembrance Day words have been organised into four groups of four, clearly showing all hidden words below the word search. There are x19 words to find in total and nouns are illustrated on page 1.
These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (backwards). Words to find are; bugle, cross, eleven, november, died, line of duty (no space), remember, sad, silence, hero, honour, medal, serve, soldier, memorial, poppy, red, war and wreath.
Recommendations
I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). This word search may be printed and laminated to be reused.

What’s included?
This download includes x2 resources which have been designed to use separately AND together. There are x25 pdf sheets.
What’s it for?
This download includes two activities which can be used together. These resources enable learners to use their knowledge of the sounds s a t p i n to match graphemes with the corresponding picture AND word (resource 1). Once these ‘sound/word/picture’ jigsaw puzzles have been completed learners can use their knowledge of Phase 2/3 sounds to write these words (resource 2).
Who’s it for?
This resource set has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource 1
’Grapheme/word/picture’ match puzzles
There are x10 images for the sounds s/a/t/p and x5 images for letters ‘i’ and ’n’.
The tick in each jigsaw puzzle picture box (top right) indicates that this image is a word which can be sounded out. Once they have matched all the three-part jigsaw puzzles learners can write these words (resource 2).
How to use it?
An adult prints out ‘Grapheme/picture match puzzles’ sheet onto card and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate ‘letters/graphemes’ from ‘words’ and ‘pictures’. The set of cut up letters/words/pictures can then be placed on a table top for learners to match as ‘three part’ mini jigsaw puzzles. Each letter only fits the corresponding word and picture.
Pictures included in this set

Resource 2
Writing words resource
Two differentiated ‘writing words’ sheets are included. Page 1 provides more support for learners than page 2 as page 1 includes the number of lines to write on - showing how many sounds are in each word. Page 2 has one line for each word.
Pages 1-2. Learners sound out and write the words for the pictures featured on the sheet, one picture per box.
Red letters/lines (to write on) indicate a ‘tricky’ sound which may be difficult to hear clearly when the word is spoken. E.g. ‘planets’ is often said as ‘planits’ with an ‘i’ sound. Learners may need help with these (red) letters/sounds.
Page 3 clearly shows the answers.

What’s included?
This download includes x4 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This set focuses on tricky words, all ‘nouns’ with a matching image. This activity has been designed for learners to look more closely at some of the first 200 high frequency words and attempt to read these words. Although these words are not intended to be ‘sounded out’ as it is difficult to do so - if learners focus on the black letters (red letters indicate sounds are tricky) they can use their phonics knowledge to ‘work out’ the black letter sounds and (along with looking at the images) attempt to read the words.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource could support pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Adults pre-cut along dotted lines and shuffle the set of x17 words (and images) then place cards face-up on the carpet/a table top for learners to read and match.
Resource Details…
These words are from the first 200 high frequency word list.
Words have been organised depending on which phonics phase they fit in with. This coded system is made clear by a ‘key’ displayed top, right on every page of the resource.
underlined indicates that together underlined letters have one sound, for example ‘sh’ in ‘shoe’
red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters, e.g. ‘gi’ in ‘giant’ or letters which may be pronounced differently e.g. the ‘er’ in ‘water’ is often pronounced as ‘uh’ or ‘a’.
the small white cross (top-left of each image box) indicates that these words are not intended to be sounded out, though (as said) if learners focus on the black letters in these words, along with the pictures, they may be able to identify words to read/match them.
Words included
The words on sheets 1 to 4 have been arranged alphabetically and are as follows:
ball
bear
clothes
door
eyes
giant
head
horse
house
magic
mouse
money
one
school

What’s included?
This download includes x9 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
These resources are word/picture puzzles to sound out (read) high frequency words (nouns) and match each word with the corresponding image. These words can be sounded out and are clearly linked to phonics Phases 2, 3, 5 and 6+ using a colour coded key (included). You can use this to help you introduce the appropriate word/picture puzzles at the relevant ‘phonics level’ for your learners.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children and pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is ideal for pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and suitable for older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
An adult can pre-cut along dotted lines provided and the set of x45 words (and images) can be shuffled and placed face-up on the carpet/a table top for learners to read and match.
Resource Details…
These words are from the first 200 high frequency word list.
Words have been organised depending on which phonics phase they fit in with. This colour coded system is made clear by a ‘key’ displayed top, right on every page of the resource.
pink indicates that the words are from phase 2
purple indicates that the words are from phase 3
turquoise indicates that the words are from phase 5
grey indicates that the words are from phase 6+
underlined indicates that together underlined letters have one sound, for example ‘sh’ in ‘fish’
red letters indicate the tricky letters. Red/tricky letters includes ‘irregular’ letters/sounds, e.g. ‘gg’ in the word ‘egg’
the small white tick (top-left of each image box) indicates that these words are intended to be sounded out
In the ‘word box’ at the top-right there is a coloured triangle which links to this colour coded system. You can use this to help you introduce the word/picture puzzles according to which phonics level your learners are at.

What’s included?
This pdf download includes x3 landscape orientation sheets featuring x7 colour ‘splats’ with colour name labels with clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate/cellophane colours for (window) display.
What’s it for?
These colours have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the coloured shapes look beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the colour ‘falls’ depends on the position of the colours in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole set of colours together as a focus to encourage learners to recognise and name each colour. The colours can of course be repositioned and displayed as you choose. A ‘Colours!’ label (to be displayed with the set of shapes) is included.
This resource would also support work on shadows and light/dark.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students who would appreciate a pop of colour shining through when the sun comes out!
Resource Details
There are x3 pages. The first page includes clear instructions with two colours, the second page includes remaining colours in the set and the last page the ‘Colours!’ word label.
The colours featured in this resource are:
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink and purple.
Suggestions
We recommend printing and making these letters out of white card - paper would be too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are quite inexpensive online.
We also recommend also backing every colour in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed - this looks so much nicer on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time and to do this x6 sheets of A4 white card will be needed (instead of x3 sheets).

This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently.
Using cards with a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot (word side facing up) and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below (picture side up!)
Using cards without a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then flip it over to see if they were correct - looking at the picture on the other side.
What is needed to make these?
x2 sheets of white A4 card (for the printer)
decent scissors
a metal ruler (for ‘scoring’)
scoring tool (to help fold the card accurately)
a glue stick
How to use it?
An adult needs to print the sheets onto card and follow the instructions (included on both sheets) to make these cards double-sided/back-to-back.
The set of back-to-back cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, for learners to use on their own/with adult support.
Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.

What’s included?
x10 sheets (picture and word cards) for simple words to sound out focusing on the sounds ‘a, e, i, o and u’. This download includes x5 sets of x20 cards (x10 pictures and x10 words per set). Portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This phonics activity enables learners to sound out graphemes to read simple simple words (all contain the ‘a/e/i/o or u’ sound) to match with the corresponding picture. This set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
How to use it?
An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted guide lines make where to cut clear). Each set (a/e/i/o/u) is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed and to help finding a relevant matching card easier.
A set (or more than one set!) of these cards can be placed on a carpet/table top and learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then match this to the picture from the same set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.
Resource Details…
The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phases 2 and 3 but mainly Phase 2. Phase 3 sounds included are v/w/x/y/z
